The importance of quiet time in the workplace

So here at TouchFoundry we take our work pretty seriously. Although we’re all a little bonkers and off-kilter at times, it’s part of the magic sauce that makes us, well, us!

While we’re all for culture, and by no means ever want to dilute the fire and energy that brings us all to work every day and keeps us delivering good work, it’s important to find the balance between focus time, collaboration time, and everything in and between.

We do our best to maintain a sense of awareness and respect for each other but when the going gets tough… things can spiral into a moment of temporary insanity as we escalate at times to collaboratively solve issues.

We find that our mornings are usually very busy! Coordinating multiple standups with the various clients and teams we interface with and after hashing through our own internal standups – we break away to accomplish our goals and fulfil hopes and dreams. During this crucial period of what is one of the most productive times of day here in studio, it’s important we keep distractions and noise-pollution to a minimum.

While we all have our own ways of dealing with distractions during this time, sometimes cross-chat is inevitable. We do our best to maintain a sense of awareness and respect for each other but when the going gets tough… things can spiral into a moment of temporary insanity as we escalate at times to collaboratively solve issues.

These “breakaways” are best handled in one of the collaborative working zones we have in the office – but when we forget this, “the noise police” needs to visit. As such, we invented a practice called “Quiet time” – a set time during the day where all employees switch from a normal working environment to an environment where disruptions and talking is kept to a minimal. Quiet time promotes productivity as it increases the level of focus within the working environment.

Since we like to solve problems with technology and automate all the things, we thought it easier just to write a very simple piece of software that can do the policing for us. We called this piece: “Quiet Time” and have opened it up for use to the public.

Quiet time promotes productivity as it increases the level of focus within the working environment.

In short, Quiet Time monitors the audio levels of your environment and “hushes” offenders when noise levels get out of control. With toggles managing the degree of sensitivity for the triggers, along with what the alert threshold should be, Quiet Time allows a team to configure the settings to best suit their environment.

Best set up in a central location (so as to monitor sound space-wide) anyone can take the helm of running Quiet Time – or better yet, setting it up on a Raspberry Pi plugged into a commonly visible telly!

“Quiet time” also has a calming effect on the work environment, the elimination of the daily hustle and bustle of noise within the work environment enables one to collect one’s thoughts and bring more intensified focus to the tasks at hand. One will even see an improvement on the time spent to complete tasks!

The benefits of “Quiet time” are unlimited as it will be beneficial to all team members within the work environment. We’ve found it essential to implement “Quiet time” within the work environment as it:

  • Reduces disruptions within the work environment at critical times
  • Promotes focus of the team members
  • Builds mutual respect among co-workers
  • Improves the overall productivity within the work environment

One should always strive to achieve the best and “Quiet time” is one of the stepping stones to achieve success. “Work hard in silence, let the success make all the noise”.

Hopefully Quiet Time might help you to restore order to your focus times as it does for us when times get heated. Give it a whirl, and let us know what you think!
